Working towards a rejuvenated Sydney Fish Market

UrbanGrowth NSW and Sydney Fish Market today entered into a Memorandum of Understanding, committing them to working together on the rejuvenation of the fish market as part of the broader transformation of The Bays Precinct.
A re-imagined Sydney Fish Market will be the centre-piece of the proposed Bays Market District in Blackwattle Bay, which is one of the top priorities in the transformation project.
“UrbanGrowth NSW has an ambition to create a new, world-class market precinct and dining destination connected to the water in Blackwattle Bay, centred around a rejuvenated Sydney Fish Market,” said UrbanGrowth NSW Chief Executive David Pitchford.
“The MOU between UrbanGrowth NSW and Sydney Fish Market formalises our already strong working relationship and commits us to working together to set out the requirements for a new fish market and determine how it is delivered as part of a competitive process that will start in 2016 for the creation of The Bays Market District.”
General Manager of Sydney Fish Market, Bryan Skepper, welcomed the MOU.
“Sydney Fish Market is already one of the most popular attractions in Sydney but we believe it can deliver so much more and in turn become a major driver for the NSW visitor economy. Our ambition is to become a key tourist destination on the western edge of the CBD while also acting as a gateway to the future Bays Precinct,” Mr Skepper said.
“This is a huge win for Sydney, for the NSW economy and for the Australian seafood industry that will be widely welcomed.”
The Bays Market District is a priority destination in The Bays Precinct Urban Transformation Program.
Sydney Fish Market has operated in Blackwattle Bay for 50 years, and is home to seafood retailers and wholesalers, specialised food stores, restaurants and cafes, a wholesale auction floor, a working fishing fleet and Sydney Seafood School.
